Channelaire Chorus wins top honors at competition
The Channelaire Chorus has once again earned first-place gold medals at the Sweet Adelines International regional competition held recently in Bakersfield. The win, its fourth since 2001, allows the chorus to represent its region at an international competition in Honolulu in 2008.
The singers are evaluated on four levels when competing: sound, expression, music and showmanship.
This year, contest judges expressed their satisfaction by awarding winning scores and making complimentary remarks. "Beautiful and strong vocal skills," the expression judge commented on her score sheet. "Really wonderful presentation of barbershop music," the music judge said.
Channelaire Chorus was organized in Ventura County in 1962 by a group of 20. Today, the chorus has more than 100 members, who all share the love of singing and performing.
Although singing is the core, education is also a valuable part of the organization. In addition to taking classes to increase vocal production skills, sharpen choreography techniques and improve visual performance, members also attend seminars to improve communication skills, learn how to manage people and become more knowledgeable in aspects of keeping an administrative organization running smoothly, all skills that can be used in their daily lives.
The Channelaire Chorus is a registered chapter of Sweet Adelines International, a worldwide organization of women singers committed to advancing the musical art form of barbershop harmony through education and performances.
