Housing challenges and proposed solutions

COUNTY'S TOP CHALLENGES

Striking a balance

These three priorities within the county must be balanced for success:

  • Concerns about the environment, such as open land and pollution.

  • Social equality issues, such as affordable housing.

  • Economic issues, such as jobs and businesses’ needs.

PROPOSED SOLUTIONS

Building a "compact" in Ventura County

  • Community groups must come together and develop a vision of the future.

Promoting "livable community models"

  • Encourage local councils to support projects that will benefit a range of uses and income levels.

  • Re-examine need for so many large schools, which can contribute to sprawl.

  • Adopt ordinances that require all new developments to include affordable- housing units.

  • Adopt flexible building codes to encourage renovation of older communities.

Achieve a better balance of jobs and housing

  • Encourage employers to help their workers secure affordable housing.

  • Develop a regionwide strategy that will help attract high-skilled workers to the county.

Preparing for the Knowledge Economy

  • Work on creation of jobs that can truly support familes.

  • Develop strong work force education programs to help workers secure high-paying jobs.
