It will take months to repair area roads, bridges

Caltrans officials expect months of work will be needed to repair some Ventura County roads and bridges damaged in this month's storms.

Four of five roads into the Ojai Valley were closed because of storm damage, and Caltrans estimates it will take until the fall for all of those routes to return to normal.

On Friday, only two lanes were open on Highway 33 near Creek Road, allowing traffic in both directions along the Arnaz Grade. It is expected to take two to four months to fully restore that road.

New footings must be built in San Antonio Creek, and the hill must be reinforced. Before work can begin, Caltrans must receive clearances from both the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the California Department of Fish and Game.

Other highway news includes:

  • Highway 33 about four miles north of Ojai to Lockwood Valley Road is expected to open within a week.
  • Caltrans has closed Highway 150 from the Santa Barbara County line to Santa Ana Road, as crews work to repair damage caused by mudslides and flooding. The section to the Santa Barbara County line is expected to open Tuesday. But a washed-out bridge past the Santa Barbara County line needs to be rebuilt. Reconstruction is expected to begin in a month, and Caltrans estimates the work will be finished in the fall.

Caltrans officials plan to use Highway 192 as a detour for Highway 150 while the bridge is being rebuilt. Highway 192 is closed because of flooding but is expected to reopen next week.

  • Highway 150 from the Ojai summit to Highway 126 is closed because of washouts and slides. Caltrans officials estimate it will reopen in April.

Beginning Monday afternoon, Metrolink will resume operating trains to Montalvo, Oxnard and Camarillo. All three stations were inaccessible after the storm, which left several sinkholes and caused other damage to the tracks north of Moorpark.

Crews are still completing the work, however, and the trains will be traveling slower than normal. To compensate for the slower speeds, trains 102, 104 and 106 will depart from Montalvo, Oxnard and Camarillo 10 minutes earlier than usual until further notice. Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner service will not be available until Feb. 8.

In the Los Padres National Forest, officials have found extensive damage to roads and trails, primarily in the Ojai and Santa Barbara ranger districts.

Roads damaged by falling rocks, mudslides and flooding will be off-limits until repairs are made. According to officials, the ground is still unstable in many areas, and additional slides are likely. For a complete list of closures, visit http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/lospadres.

Water-pollution warning signs will be taken down Saturday along San Antonio Creek, the Ventura River, Surfer's Point, Marina Park, Emma Wood State Beach, Solimar Beach, Mandos Cove and Faria Beach.

The signs were posted after a large sewage spill from an Ojai Valley Sanitation District facility. The problem was fixed Tuesday.

Water quality at some Ventura County beaches remains below state standards, however, and warning signs will stay at Hobson Beach, the Promenade in Ventura, San Buenaventura Beach at Sanjon Road, Marina Park Beach, Peninsula Beach/Harbor Cove, Oxnard Beach Park and County Line Beach.

The public should avoid contact with ocean water within 50 yards of a sign.
