White House likely to get disaster request next week
Schwarzenegger toured the La Conchita mudslide on Wednesday and signed a disaster proclamation that made Ventura County eligible for state disaster assistance. A federal declaration must be made by the president, who can act only after being asked to do so by the governor of an affected state.
A press aide to the governor said state officials were waiting for a more complete damage assessment and weighing requests from other counties, including Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino, and Kern, for disaster declarations. Once the additional information is gathered and assessed, she said, it is likely the California request will be submitted to President Bush next week.
A federal declaration would make the county eligible for assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
