Any turtle on beach needs help
Ventura County's endangered Western pond turtles thrive in freshwater rivers and ponds, but the flooding has washed many of them to the ocean, where they cannot survive long in the salt water.
Stephanie Pappas, the executive director of The Chelonian Science Foundation, a Ventura-based rescue organization for turtles and tortoises, explained that Ventura County is home to some of California's 63 colonies of these endangered turtles, whose scientific name is Clemmys marmorata.
"Any turtle that's found in the ocean locally is not a sea turtle," Pappas said, explaining that sea turtles are extremely rare off local shores.
