Crew repairs Calabasas sewer line
About 800 feet of 12-inch pipe were used to create a temporary bypass on a sewer line that had been broken by a storm-caused landslide Tuesday night or Wednesday morning, said Arlene Post of Las Virgenes Municipal Water District.
The landslide was on a hill west of Las Virgenes Road, just south of Lost Hills Road.
A 120-foot-tall crane was used to install two 10,000-pound pumps that pump sewage out of a manhole above the break, through temporary above-ground pipes and into to a manhole below the break. The work continued through Wednesday night.
The sewage goes to the Tapia Water Reclamation Facility for treatment.
The break caused the closure of Malibu Lagoon State Beach, which is more commonly known as Surfrider Beach.
The beach will remain closed until tests show that bacterial contamination from the spill has dissipated.
Post said crews will stay on the repair site to ensure the bypass continues to operate properly.
