KCLU may return to air today
The station is replacing some parts and equipment that were damaged during the recent rains, said General Manager Mary Olson. Those parts were expected to arrive by Friday.
Meanwhile, Olson expected that the station could operate at reduced power, meaning it can be heard throughout the county, but might be a bit weak or full of static in some areas.
"We have received hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of phone calls," Olson said. "My in box is chock-full of people saying, 'I feel like I've lost a friend.'"
The station suffered a double whammy in the recent storms, Olson said.
First, a Southern California Edison transformer was damaged, probably by lightning, knocking out KCLU's power.
Second, that lightning surge probably came through power lines, damaging the station's electronic equipment.
Other area public radio stations, including KCRW and KUSC, also had some weather-related problems. A KCRW transmitter that brings the station to the Santa Paula-Moorpark area suffered a power outage, but engineers have been stymied by closed roads.
"We can't get up there to fix the problem, and neither can Southern California Edison," said Steve Herbert, chief engineer. "We're hoping it might be fixed by next week, but that's not based on anything in particular -- just hope."
