After the rains

Here are some things homeowners need to do or should do once the rains have let up.

Check to see how water drained around the home. Did it flow against the home or away from it? "This is a must," said Reine Wiley, vice president of Wiley Property Inspections in Thousand Oaks.

Climb into the attic to check for any signs of leaking.

If you have a raised foundation, go under the house to check for standing pools of water.

Notice any pooling elsewhere on your property.

Check windows for seepage.

Check window panes and insides of windows for moisture buildup.

Make sure no dirt or earth is up against the home. Moisture in such piles can then seep into the walls.

Check to see if doors are opening and closing properly. They can expand and contract in such weather.

Check to make sure all mastic -- adhesive, sealants, etc. -- on roof and other areas is working properly.

Check to make sure vents are working properly.

If you have an asphalt driveway, check for cracks that can result from this cold-warm, wet-dry weather pattern. Finding this early enough can be the difference between a simple recoating or having the driveway completely redone.

Replenish crushed granite parking areas and such that may have been washed away.
