Recent federal funding for bridge repair and replacement:

Federal Aid Highway Act (1971)

  • Covered all federally funded bridges.
  • Established data collection requirements for bridge inspection.
  • Established standards for inspections and inspectors.

Surface Transportation Assistance Act (1978)

  • Created highway Bridge Rehabilitation and Replacement Program.
  • Covered all public bridges longer than 6.1 meters (20 feet).
  • Provided $4.2 billion for repairs and replacement over four years.

Highway Improvement Act (1982)

Provided $7.1 billion over four years.

Surface Transportation and Uniform Relocation Assistance Act (1987)

  • Provided $8.2 billion over five years.
  • Added requirements for underwater inspections and fracture-critical inspections.

Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act (1991)

  • Provided $16.1 billion over six years.
  • Mandated state implementation of bridge management systems.

National Highway System Designation Act (1995)

Repealed mandate for states' implementation of bridge management systems.

Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (1998)

Provided $20.4 billion over six years.
