Making Hay while the sun shines

Who: Australian author and food stylist Donna Hay is coming to the U.S. to promote and sign copies of her new cookbook, "The Instant Cook" (Fourth Estate, $34.95). The tour includes two stops this weekend in the Los Angeles area.

Book-signing 1: Shoppers can pick up the book and the blood oranges, baby bok choy and other in-season ingredients featured in its recipes when Hay appears 9 to 11 a.m. Sunday at the Hollywood Farmers Market, Ivar and Selma avenues between Sunset and Hollywood boulevards. There is limited free parking at the Doolittle Theatre, 1623 N. Vine St., and free-with-validation parking at the shopping center Sunset & Vine; enter on Morningside Drive. The event is being organized by The Cook's Library. For information, call 1-323-655-3141.

Book-signing 2: Hay will demonstrate some of her recipes and sign books during an appearance 2:30 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Sur La Table, 6333 W. Third St., Los Angeles. For information, call 1-323-954-9190.

Donna Hay, the magazine: In addition to her cookbook titles, Hay in 2001 began publishing a bimonthly magazine in conjunction with News Corp., a branch of the Rupert Murdoch media empire. Available in the magazine sections of Barnes & Noble and Borders Books, the magazine features the same minimalist photography and recipes as the cookbooks but for American readers it can take some getting used to: Thanks to seasonal differences brought on by Australia's opposite-hemisphere location, the current March/April issue is devoted to the foods and moods not of spring but autumn.
