Chefs around the county offer small plates of food with your wine

Is it just us, or are portions getting smaller?

It was bound to happen in the wake of the gastronomical gross-out that was "Super Size Me." But in some cafes and wine bars in Ventura County, the focus is not just on size. Flavor, artistry and a nice glass of wine also play roles.

They have a word for such things in Spain: tapas, or "small plates," appetizer-sized delicacies meant to be ordered singly for a quick bite or in multiples to make a meal.

In Ventura County, the concept translates into plates bearing locally grown produce and the products of chefs' imaginations.
