President's speech is highlight of week

EDITOR'S NOTE: Political adviser Steve Frank of Simi Valley, a delegate at this week's Republican National Convention in New York City, is writing a daily diary of his experiences for the Ventura County Star.

Our last day in New York started with a speech by Sen. John McCain, then lunch with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. We heard the president speak and ended with a party at the USS Intrepid that started at midnight.

More than 1,000 New Yorkers waited on the sidewalk at Times Square just for a glimpse of Gov. Schwarzenegger. Inside, the delegation heard the governor talk about turning California around and his commitment to re-elect the president.

Rumors abounded that radicals would try to stop the convention or at least disrupt it Thursday night. During the president's speech, a protester started shouting in the midst of the California section. She was immediately stopped, picked up and carried out. When this happened, the delegation chanted "four more years" and the rest of the hall did the same. As the speech went further, periodic chants of "four more years" accompanied the carrying out of other shouting demonstrators who somehow got on the floor.

The last event of the week was a concert by the Pointer Sisters on the deck of the USS Intrepid. Who says that Republicans don't know how to party?

And, we can dance as well. Watching people on the floor of Madison Square Garden, who are otherwise staid, stable pillars of their community standing on their chairs moving to the music and dancing with total strangers is quite a sight! But it was the president we most enjoyed during this last convention day.

Seeing his eyes sparkle, seeing him willing to poke fun at himself, taking a determined stand on defeating terrorism before it returns to our shores, he gave us confidence we could win the battle. Overall, it was an exciting week. Though the key decisions were predetermined, this was a worthwhile convention.

New York was a great choice, since it proved the GOP was willing to go into the "belly of the beast" to bring our message of freedom. New friends were made; we visited a world-class city, met many of our nation's leaders and got reinvigorated for the Nov. 2 election.

But it will be great getting back to Ventura County!
