About Alzheimer's Disease
Alzheimer's disease is a progressive, degenerative brain disease and
the most common form of dementia.
- 4 million Americans have Alzheimer's disease.
- 14 million will suffer from it by the middle of the next century unless a cure is found.
- U.S. society spends $100 billion a year for long-term care related to the disease.
- The federal government estimates spending $349.2 million for Alzheimer's disease research in 1998.
Warning signs: The Alzheimer's Association had
developed this list of symptoms of Alzheimer's disease:
- Frequent forgetfulness, unexplained confusion.
- Difficulty performing familiar tasks.
- Problems with language.
- Disorientation to time and place.
- Poor or decreased judgment.
- Problems with abstract thinking.
- Misplacing things.
- Changes in mood or behavior.
- Changes in personality.
- Loss of initiative.
