Volunteers needed to help burned horses
The animals are staying in the stables of Joe and Sharon Goodman of Somis. They're owned by Redondo Beach residents Darrel and Jeralyn Koupal.
One of the horses suffered burns on 30 percent of its body, mostly on its legs and face, veterinarian Kent Sullivan said. Two others also were in serious condition.
The horses must be bathed every day, and their bandages must be changed regularly to help heal the burn wounds.
Volunteers are also needed to walk the horses from 8:30 a.m. to noon to maintain their circulation and healing process.
Initial treatment for the first two weeks is expected to cost $5,000 to $8,000. Additional skin grafts and chronic wound care will be needed, Sullivan said.
