Bob Bryan advances at Newport

Mike returns home with rib injury

Bob Bryan will be forced to go at it alone for the rest of the Miller Lite Hall of Fame Championships at Newport, R.I.

Twin brother and doubles partner, Mike, flew home to Camarillo on Wednesday to receive treatment for a rib injury he suffered in the mixed doubles at Wimbledon.

The Bryans, the two-time defending champions and No. 1 ranked team in the world, were forced to withdraw from doubles. Bob, a wild card, advanced to the quarterfinals in singles with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Serbia's Dusan Vemic on Wednesday.

"Mike was battling when we got here with strained cartilage and it just kept getting worse, so he bagged it and went home," said Bob. "It would have been cool to go for a three-peat, but there are more important things coming up, like the U.S. Open. He just can't risk it."

Bob was one of only three players to advance on Wednesday as rain forced the cancellation of the rest of the schedule. His opponent, Cyril Saulnier of France, got his match in with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Australian Scott Draper.

The last time Bob reached the quarterfinals of an ATP event was at Queen's in 2000, when he defeated Tim Henman and Max Mirnyi before falling to Pete Sampras.

"My chances are good here. I am playing well and getting more confidence with each match," said Bob. "Today I was returning good and serving big. The grass is playing really well, so my slice serves are working well. I have nothing to lose, so I am just going out there with a good attitude, not playing too cautious and swinging away."
