Bryans' hopes for twin wins come up short
Camarillo brothers beaten in doubles quarterfinals
The third-seeded Bryans lost to No. 5 Laender Paes of India and David Rikl of the Czech Republic 6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-3 in the men's doubles quarterfinals.
"We didn't really have it today. You have to give all the credit to Laender and Dave. They played really well today," said Bob.
Paes and Rikl, who had lost to the Bryans in straight sets at the French Open, evened the series between the teams at 2-2.
The Bryans, the top-ranked doubles team in the world, captured their first Grand Slam title at the French Open last month.
Mike and mixed doubles partner Lisa Raymond are still in contention for their third Grand Slam title after winning the French Open last month and the U.S. Open in 2002.
The second-seeded duo faces Pavel Vizner of the Czech Republic and Nicole Prat of Australia in the second round today.
The Bryans have a 36-15 record this year with three tournament titles. Their 12 career titles are the most by a team of brothers.
They have played 111/2 straight weeks on their European swing. The identical twins are contemplating squeezing in two weeks off before the U.S. Open begins in Aug. 25.
"Our goal was to not come home from Europe until he we were ranked No. 1, so that mission was accomplished," said Mike. "Now we have to look toward winning the U.S. Open."
The Bryans will make their return appearance in the states when they begin play at the Miller Lite Hall of Fame Championships in Newport, R.I., on Monday. They will not be playing in the Mercedes Benz event in Los Angeles on July 28, opting instead to play at the Legg Mason Tennis Classic in Washington, D.C., which is owned by the Bryans' agency, SFX.
