Voter Registration and Absentee Ballots

How to register

To register to vote, you must be 18, a United States citizen and a resident of Ventura County. Prison inmates, felony parolees and those judged by courts to be mentally incompetent are ineligible.

You must register at least 15 days before the election. Voter registration forms are available at most state and local government offices, including the Department of Motor Vehicles.

You can also order one from the Ventura County Elections Division by calling (805) 654-2781. Online registration is available at the Secretary of State's Web site, http://www.sos.ca.gov/. The next election is the presidential primary on Feb. 5, 2008.

Absentee ballots

Applications for absentee ballots are included with sample ballots, mailed out to registered voters 40 days before an election.

Applications to request an absentee ballot must reach the Elections Division no later than seven days before an election. Mail them to Ventura County Elections Division, 800 S. Victoria Ave., Ventura, CA 93009-1201.

Applications must include name, address, address to mail application (if different than voter's address), name and date of the election, voter's signature. For the Feb. 5, 2008, primary, the deadline for requesting an absentee ballot is Jan. 29, 2008.

Absentee ballots must be returned by 8 p.m. -- close of polls Election Day -- at either the Elections Division office, 800 S. Victoria Ave., Ventura, or a polling place.
